Meeting Report 11-13-2013

Special guest, Sarah Hudgins, local administrator for the "Wreaths Across America" project attended the meeting. A motion was made, seconded, and voted on unanimously, for our Chapter to again participate during the month of December 2013, in the laying of the wreaths on the graves of local area soldiers who were kiled in action (KIAs). And as done last year, Chapter members that live in the various surrounding counties, will be asked to volunteer for this project. Volunteer duties include (1) locating the various KIA cemetery graves for a given county/town area, (2) contacting the KIA's family members to get permission for the Wreath laying ceremony, and (3) performing the Wreath laying ceremony (possibly with family members at the cemetery) on specified day & time. Sarah also took our order for 25 wreaths.

Dwight Winkler, the Wharton County Veterans Service Officer gave a short presentation regarding Agent Orange claims. He also handed out a "VVA Self-Help Guide" brochure, for which he then covered in some detail. The brochure contains valuable information regarding the process of putting in claims for Agent Orange exposure for the veteran and his/her family members. One of the main points that Dwight spoke of, was all the diseases listed on pages 4 & 5 of the brochure. He suggested that every veteran make sure that his/her doctor is aware of this list of diseases so that the doctor can better access/diagnose/monitor your overall health based off this list of recognized Agent Orange causing diseases. Our chapter president reminded everyone that our Chapter will be participating in the El Campo Christmas Parade, being held on Thursday, December 5th, starting at 7:00 PM. Our Chapter will be riding in the parade on a float, which we will construct on a 40 foot trailer. The trailer and truck are being provided by a local veteran supporter. All chapter members were encouraged to participate in the parade.

A final reminder was given to members regarding the upcoming Chapter Christmas party. RSVPs would be mailed out as soon as possible, to all Chapter members.
