VVA Chapter 1069 Meeting Report for: Feb 2-14-2018

The meeting was held at Mikeska’s BBQ, El Campo, TX.
-
The following Board members were present: Sternadel, Steelman, F. Kulcak, and Mahlmann.
-
There were 33 members and 11 guests present.
-
President Leonard Sternadel declared the meeting open at 1900 hours and the following business was transacted.
-
Sternadel announced that the El Campo PD will be providing security for our meetings.
-
He also introduced Jose Perez as a prospective new member.
-
The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was recited and a prayer was said.
-
Sternadel read a Thank You card from Ms. David Haas. She expressed her gratitude to the chapter members
that attended David's funeral services. David was a veteran of both the Korea and Vietnam conflicts.
David was a solid member and contributed much to the various functions of the Chapter. He will be missed.

The meeting was then recessed for the meal and reconvened at 1945.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as presented.

Dwight Winkler, our chapter's Service Officer, then gave his monthly Veterans Benefits presentation.
His handout contained contact information for various persons involved with veteran's benefits and other veteran related topics.

Dwight also informed the chapter that Don Montoya has resigned as the Wharton County's Service Officer, and that
Dwight would be the interim VSO until someone was hired by the County on a permanent basis - hopefully by April.
He added that chapter member, Mike Harbaugh was acting as Service Officer assistant for 16 hours a week. A BIG
Thank You goes out to Mike Harbaugh for all the volunteer time and effort he has put into helping out
at the WC VSO office the past 2 years.

The VVA TSC (Texas State Council) scholarship applications are available. The deadline is March 1st.

The VVA National Directory update program is in progress. You still have time to participate.

The upcoming bi-yearly VVA TSC meeting will be held in El Paso, April 6 and 7.

The local veterans-help organization, "Every Day Heroes" Cook-Off will be held March 16 and 17 in El Campo.
Folks will be needed to judge the BBQ cooking event, and so if any chapter member is interested, please contact Leonard.

As everyone knows, our chapter president, Leonard Sternadel, has been nominated and selected by the local
Wharton County Daughters of the American Revolution Society (DARS), Comfort Wood Chapter
to receive the "Outstanding Veteran Volunteer" Award for this area.
The Award will be presented to Leonard February 17th in East Bernard.
He has also been selected and is now eligible to receive the DARS State "Texas Outstanding Veteran Voluntary" Award.
The State Awards ceremony will be held March 10th in San Antonio, at a ceremony held during the DARS State convention.
CONGRATULATIONS TO LEONARD FOR THIS AWARD AND ALL HIS HARD WORK WITH VETERANS!

REMINDER - March 28th is designated as "National Vietnam War Veterans Day".

Leonard then concluded by informing the chapter that Commissioner Chris King has been ill, but is on the road to
recovery. He asked all to keep Chris and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Chris is one of the Wharton
County Commisioners and is a big supporter of our chapter.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
