"The Breaking Point Has Arrived"

There is an overwhelming crisis on our border, and border/immigration agents do not have the resources they need to effectively deal with it.

The Border Patrol recently reassigned agents responsible for inspecting cross-border cargo and shut down highway checkpoints in order to process the latest influx of asylum seekers. About 100,000 migrants arrived this past month, and our immigration courts were already facing an 800,000-case backlog.

Border Patrol Commissioner Kevin McAleenan put it this way: "The breaking point has arrived."

So last week I voted in support of the President's declaration of a national emergency. Criminal cartels responsible for 150,000 homicides are taking advantage of this chaos to traffic drugs and humans into the U.S. Our government's unwillingness to secure the border and fix our broken immigration system creates a dangerous situation for all involved and strengthens the cartels' influence in Mexico and Central America.

I went on Fox News to discuss what needs to be done about the disaster at the border:

Ending Infanticide

When I ran for Congress, I expected that one day I would probably end up in a debate over the issue of abortion, but I never in my wildest dreams expected to be in a debate over the worth of a child who has already been born alive. This week, I signed a discharge petition in an effort to force House leadership to bring the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act to the House floor for a vote.

Check out my article in the Victoria Advocate making the case for the Born-Alive Act and explaining what Pro-Life members of Congress are doing to bring this bill up for a vote.

Honoring Vietnam Veterans

Last week we celebrated Vietnam Veterans Day, a time for our nation to celebrate these courageous heroes and give them the honor they deserve. Thank you so much to everyone who served - our nation is forever in your debt.

I had the privilege of recognizing on the House floor Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez, a Vietnam veteran and Medal of Honor recipient from El Campo. Check out the video or this article to hear about his truly amazing story.

Focused on Hurricane Recovery & Job Creation

Our region has come a long way since Hurricane Harvey, and a full recovery for many of our communities depends on economic development and rebuilding the tourism industry.

So I was excited to announce a $5 million economic development grant to rebuild the Rockport Center for the Arts, which will bring jobs and economic growth to our region and contribute to restoring the tourism industry that Rockport relies on.

It’s an honor for my office to be able to assist with hurricane recovery, and I will continue working with residents and communities as long as there is work left to be done.
